SUMMARY:We Lend a Hand Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Award-Winning Documentary “We Lend A Hand: The Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes” to Screen in\nBrantford on April 13\, 2026\nA largely forgotten chapter of Canadian history will be brought to light as the 50-min documentary film We Lend A Hand:\nThe Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes screens in Brantford\, Ontario. The film has been selling out theatres across\nOntario and will now be screened at the Langford Schoolhouse (1694 Colborne St E\, Brantford\, ON N3T 5M1) on April\n13th\, 2026.\nCreated by Director/Producer Colin Field and Historical Producer (and Exeter resident) Bonnie Sitter\, the documentary\ntells the extraordinary story of 40\,000 teenage girls who volunteered on Canadian farms during and after World War II\nand helped sustain the nation’s food supply when young men left to fight overseas.\nBonnie Sitter\, an author\, was searching through old family photographs when she found a captivating image of a group of\nyoung women taken on her late husband’s family farm near Thedford with a caption on the reverse that read:\n“Farmerettes 1946.”\nThis led Bonnie to research the Farmerette story\, and publish an article in The Rural Voice asking for women who served\nas Farmerettes to get in touch with her. Shirleyan English\, a retired London Free Press journalist\, read the article and\nwrote a letter to the editor\, explaining her own experience as a Farmerette\, and how it remained the best summer of her\nlife. Bonnie and Shirleyan would go on to co-author the book Onion Skins and Peach Fuzz: Memories of Ontario\nFarmerettes in 2019.\n“We wanted to capture the story of how the Farmerettes helped win the Second World War by volunteering to aid farmers\nwith food production\,” says Bonnie. “Most of these girls had never seen a farm. They came from all over Ontario as\nvolunteers. They weren’t conscripted. They chose to roll up their sleeves and do their part for Canada\, and their efforts\nhave largely been forgotten”.\nDirector Colin Field first met Bonnie in 2019 and was inspired by her research and desire to bring this forgotten\nCanadian story to life. He proposed a documentary film\, and Bonnie agreed to fundraise to bring the project alive. Colin\ninterviewed 20 Farmerettes – now in their 90s – for the documentary\, and after two years of work\, and with the help of\nsponsors and generous donors\, We Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes is finally complete.\n“It has been a privilege to travel throughout the province and hear the stories of these surviving Farmerettes\,” Field said.\n“If it wasn’t for these girls\, the soldiers wouldn’t have had food to eat and the economy would have ground to a halt”.\nThe film will be screened at 2:00 pm & 7:00 pm with doors open 30 minutes before each show.\nAfter the screening there will be a Q&A with historian & author Bonnie Sittler. Followed by a chance to acquire\nautographed copies of Onion Skins and Peach Fuzz: Memories of Ontario Farmerettes\, Shirleyan English and Bonnie\nSitter’s amazing book.\nTickets for the April 13th screening at the Langford Schoolhouse are available through the links below\nTicket Links:\n2:00 pm : https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/1984186634637?aff=oddtdtcreator\n7:00 pm : https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/1984186481178?aff=oddtdtcreator\nWatch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ImJcqxbZgs\nFor more information please visit welendahand.ca

SUMMARY:Arcady Opera Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Arcady is thrilled to present their new Opera Showcase with three captivating 20-minute musical dramas! Brought to life through the brilliant libretti of Michaela Chiste\, these performances will take place on Saturday\, March 14\, 2026 from 7:30-9:00 PM at the Waterford Old Town Hall. The fully Canadian project is generously supported by the Ontario Arts Council and features the work of Arcady’s musical director Ronald Beckett as well as associate composers Benjamin Gabbay and Emma Verdonk. Experience The Innkeeper (Beckett)\, a captivating tale where two very different worlds collide in an unforgettable encounter. Featuring baritone Michael York as stoic innkeeper Frederick and soprano Cristina Pisani as fiery jazz singer Jasmine\, The Innkeeper is a poignant story of renewal as two lost souls rediscover the rhythm of life. The Scholars brings four students together for a night of meditation on human progress. Through innovative music by Gabbay\, Mary (soprano Sarah Storms)\, Agatha (mezzo-soprano Mairi Demings)\, Victor (tenor Cameron Mazzei)\, and Albert (baritone Christopher Pitre-McBride) debate the limits of knowledge in a philosophical reckoning. The Gardener (Verdonk) follows Marco (baritone Anthony Rodrigues)\, as he faces figures from his past within his sanctuary of flowers. Lost friend Zinnia (soprano Vivien Illion)\, former love Heliotrope (soprano Michaela Chiste)\, and mother Carnation (mezzo-soprano Michal Aloni) present contemplations on a life fully lived. Don’t miss these life-affirming productions that will leave you humming their tunes long after the curtain falls! SUMMARY:The Voice of The River: Grand River Community Play
DESCRIPTION:The Voice of The River: Grand River Community Play will be showing in Dunnville on Thursday\, August 21st at 6:00 pm at the RCAF Dunnville Museum/Base \nThe Grand River Community Play Project: The Voice of The River is an interdisciplinary piece that will connect the communities and inhabitants that live along the length of the Grand River – a river that starts in the highlands of Dufferin County\, travels 310 km\, before emptying into Lake Erie at Port Maitland. About a million people live within the watershed\, a watershed that passes cities\, towns and villages\, trees\, wild grasses and coyotes\, and includes thirty-nine municipalities and two First Nations territories. \nThe Voice of The River is about community and the meaningful connection to Indigenous leaders and communities along the Grand River. It is an inclusive creative activity involving artists\, municipal and Indigenous leaders\, scientists\, Elders\, Community folk\, children\, NFP organizations\, educational institutions – and most importantly the Grand River. This is a project about storytelling – in all the ways stories can be told – in spoken word\, in song\, in dance\, ceremony\, in art installation\, in silence\, through different cultural lenses\, and via technology. It is being imagined as an environmental experience – something that will develop and build over time\, leading toward a unique presentation in all four seasons\, and over many years\, passing the experience along to next generations for them to reimagine\, for them to inhabit with their own stories. \nThe Voice of The River is a community event to celebrate arts\, culture and the Grand River. All are welcome!
