ONEIDA—Grade 6 students at Oneida Central Public School took some prize monies they won and donated them to World Vision Canada.
“We won first prize of $50 for a Community Poster that we submitted to the Caledonia Fair. This poster had work on it from every student,” explains Laura Lee Mattice, the students’ teacher.
The initial plan, which was to have a pizza party, eventually gave way to the idea of donating the prize money after class discussions about compassion for others. The final decision to donate the winnings was made through a class vote: “We discussed how the money could go farther to help others than for the five minutes it would take to eat one piece of pizza,” says Mattice.
