Haldimand 4H updates – Square Dance Club, Beef Club

Square Dance Club

By Evi McCutcheon

The Haldimand 4-H Square Dance Club is back in full swing! It has been some years since this club was last run, but members now are as excited as ever to learn some square dancing.

Square dancing is a social form of dance which involves four couples in each set who stand facing one another, forming a square. The dancers perform actions as directed by a caller.

Members have learned how to perform many basic square dance steps, such as the two-step, promenade, swing, allemande left and allemande right, grand chain, courtesy turn, California twirl, and do-si-do. The club has learned two square dances so far: Chase the Lady and Dip and Dive.

The club is not limited to square dancing, however, as members have also learned multiple line dances during meetings. In line dancing, the dancers, arranged in rows, perform a repeated set of steps that often go with a particular song. So far, the members of the Square Dance Club have learned the line dances Cotton-Eyed Joe, Footloose, and the Electric Slide.

Beef Club

By Elliott Hussack

CAYUGA—Hi, it’s me again, Elliott Hussack – this time for a 4-H Beef Club report. I thought long and hard about how to add a dishwasher comment like I did in my previous Potato Club reports, but I couldn’t think of any way to link it together, so I’ll just say that Canfield Community Centre still needs a dishwasher.

On Friday, August 8, 2025 the Haldimand 4-H Beef Club held our meeting at my farm in Cayuga, GABER Farm, which stands for the first initial of all my family’s first names. We started the meeting with President Gabriela Kott opening the meeting and we recited the 4-H Pledge. We then divided into three groups.

The first group was with our guest, Clay Howe, who came and spent the evening teaching us about fitting techniques and tips. We are very grateful for him sharing his knowledge and expertise.

The second group worked on showmanship practice, as we have two shows upcoming: Cattleman’s Field Day on Sunday, September 7 and our Caledonia Fair Achievement Day on Saturday, September 27.

The third group practised with washing our yearling Daisy. My Potato Club leaders would be proud because I had to use “elbow grease” to help get her cleaned up with my other 4-H Beef Club members.

We ended the meeting with snacks and thanks to our guest and to those who brought extra cattle to support us in our meeting.
