We sadly found out that on Saturday, July 1, 2023, The Press’ food columnist Anne McAlpine passed away.
Over the past eight years that Anne has written her column for The Press, readers have grown to love her column and we at The Press have grown to love Anne.
From mouth-watering recipes to tidbits from her life to kitchen hints and life lessons (food for thought), her columns brought new ideas and knowledge from her kitchen to kitchens all over Haldimand and beyond.
Anne’s visits to the office, with baked goodies in hand, were a highlight of any week – not only because her treats were so delicious, but because she would always bring such a positive presence with her, wherever she went.
Anne was a welcome member of The Press team and she was a huge supporter of the paper, never missing an opportunity to tell us when she enjoyed a particular story.
“I just have to tell you that today’s paper is just full of such great information as all of them are…. Whenever I say that I write for you I always hear how much it is liked by people. Great job!” she wrote to me recently.
Her support meant so much to us all, particularly as it came from such a genuine place of kindness.
Certainly our readers will remember her efforts to share acts of kindness in the community, something she cherished as part of her birthday celebrations every year.
You can tell how well-loved Anne was by the memories and love shown by friends posting on her Facebook wall since her passing. Scrolling down a bit further, her very last post shared reads: “Spend time with your parents while you can, because one day when you look up from your busy life, they won’t be there anymore.”
Anne, you have left a mark on all of us at The Press. We will miss you and The Press won’t be the same without you and your well-loved column.
We send our condolences to Anne’s family and friends. May the great memories you have of her give you peace and comfort during this challenging time.
Anne’s family invites everyone to join them for a gathering at the Caledonia Lions Hall (100 Haddington St. Caledonia) on Thursday, July 6 from 2 – 7 p.m. to share memories and celebrate her life.
If desired, donations may be made to Canon’s Cause in Caledonia in memory of Anne.
