4-H Beef Club visits DeKoning Meats

PORT DOVER—The Haldimand 4-H Beef Club held their third meeting on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at Hank DeKoning Meats just outside of Port Dover.

We started with the 4-H pledge and the business aspect of our meeting. The secretary’s minutes were read from the last meeting, as well as the last press report. We talked about upcoming events in our club, such as our practice show day/potluck and the judging competition.

After a few more discussions of upcoming deadlines, Murry DeKoning took us on a tour of the facilities explaining the process along the way. After we had made our way through, he answered some of the questions we had and filled us in on a life in the industry.

We broke off into groups and practised some of our judging skills, while the others were shown examples of marbling in different meats and different cuts.

We ended our meeting with a big thank you to the DeKonings; they were great hosts and the whole club was very appreciative.
