Transparency seems to be the new word in Haldimand. Everyone had received in their mail “Your Nanticoke” proposal for housing. I had no idea of this proposal until it came out at Provincial election time in May.
Empire says Haldimand County approached them. What is the truth?
In March, 2022 Haldimand County voted unanimously asking the Province to unlock Nanticoke lands (MZO). These things do seem to be transparent. What Empire is offering: 1. Brand new sewage plant, $0 increase in taxes (we will have to fix this anyway, nothing for free); 2. 2,000 homes for affordable housing (I think not); 3. 10,000 jobs – where?; 4. Indoor pool – nobody is driving from Caledonia or Dunnville to Nanticoke; 5. Parks and trails – these are fields of trees and rocks; 6. 110 acres of waterfront, which people already live or own cottages – you can’t just walk through someone’s yard to swim.
There is land in Townsend, South Cayuga (government owned).
The mayor chose to run in Provincial election that didn’t end well. Takes his job back. Now wants your vote.
Mr. Dalimonte decided to run for mayor then couldn’t. Now running for councillor again. I don’t think they are dedicated in their jobs or focused. We are a diverse County, but our roots are “rural”. Keep our farmlands safe. We count on farmers.
Thank you,
Barbara Roth,
Fisherville
Editor’s Note: Empire Communities has clarified that Haldimand County had no prior knowledge of its purchase of the Nanticoke lands or its proposal, but that the County had spoken to Empire about potentially working together on a regional sewer facility.
