Canadian Food Inspection Agency issues urgent recall of plant-based beverages due to listeria

HALDIMAND—The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit (HNHU) wishes to inform the community of a recent outbreak of listeriosis linked to certain Silk and Great Value brand plant-based refrigerated beverages. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of these products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

      As of July 12, 2024, nine cases of listeriosis in Ontario have been linked to the recalled products, resulting in five hospitalizations. The HNHU strongly advises the public to avoid consuming any of the recalled products, check their refrigerators, and immediately discard any affected items.

      Those who believe they have consumed one of these products and are feeling unwell should consult a healthcare provider.

      Listeriosis is a serious infection that can cause severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations such as newborns, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems. The incubation period for listeriosis can range from three days to three weeks, with some cases presenting symptoms up to 70 days after exposure. 

      Common symptoms of listeriosis include fever, nausea, cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, muscle aches, and headache.

      Severe symptoms of listeriosis may include stiff neck, confusion, and loss of balance.

      Preventive measures to avoid listeriosis:

High-risk individuals should avoid high-risk foods such as ready-to-eat meats, smoked fish, soft cheeses, and unpasteurized dairy products.

Thoroughly cook and reheat food to appropriate temperatures. Refer to the Ministry of Health’s publication “Food Safety: Cook” for proper cooking guidelines.

  • Avoid consuming raw or unpasteurized milk and dairy products.
  • Wash raw fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption.
  • Prevent cross-contamination between raw foods and ready-to-eat foods during preparation and storage.
  • Wash hands, clean and sanitize utensils and food preparation surfaces after contact with raw or uncooked foods.
