If you shop at the No Frills grocery store in Hagersville, then you may recognize the gentleman pictured here. This is Mike Kett, Associate Manager. In October he will be celebrating his 20th anniversary with No Frills. That’s dedication to a job well done!
Mike is a big football fan, and he applies the same dedication he shows in his work to cheering on his favourite teams – the Hamilton Ticats and the Miami Dolphins. Mike’s sports interests don’t stop there. He is also a member of the Cayuga Legion Recreational Dart League. Besides sports, I heard from a very good source (his parents Bob and Nancy Kett) that Mike is also a pretty good cook. Mike told me he enjoys cooking and baking as well. The dishes he brings to family functions have received rave reviews. Mike mentioned that his dart teammates look forward to the weeks it is Mike’s turn to bring his homemade snacks to the games.
One of Mike’s favourite recipes is called “Smoked Pig Shots,” which he prepares on his smoker. He found the original recipe online but has tweaked it to suit his tastes. Mike said he has taken this dish to many outdoor parties and everyone seems to enjoy them. This recipe can be baked in a conventional oven as well, although you will be missing the smoky flavour.
To accompany the “Smoked Pig Shots” I would choose a fresh garden salad. Start with a mixture of salad greens, add in some fresh vegetables, top with some cherry tomatoes, and mix with a vinaigrette. I often use the “Ontario Maple Dressing” below. It works as a dressing for a fresh vegetable salad as well. Enjoy!
