A Taste of Haldimand: May 23, 2024

Karon Thomson is one busy woman! I realized that firsthand when I tried to connect with her to finalize some of the details for this article. But that makes me very happy. How wonderful that we have such passionate and enthusiastic people who are committed to making our community a great place to live. Karon and her husband, David, live along the Grand River outside of Cayuga. They are originally from Hamilton but have called Haldimand County home for the last 49 years. They raised a family and now enjoy the addition of five grandchildren.

Karon Thomson

Karon is the current president of the Cayuga UCW (United Church Women) and life-long member of the church. Over the years, she has held many positions, including clerk of session. She continues to be very active helping to organize breakfasts and lunches on Sundays. You may also remember Karon from her time working at IGA in the 1980s, volunteering at JL Mitchener School, or managing the video store in Cayuga for 10 years. Our paths first crossed more than 20 years ago when I joined 4-H as a volunteer and Karon was leading clubs at that time. She is one of the most vibrant, positive, and enthusiastic people I have ever met.
The recipes Karon has shared are family favourites. The sweet & sour chicken is a staple in her household. She usually serves it with plain rice. Karon recounted a heartwarming story about her cinnamon loaf: her son had asked for the recipe and he made it for his family, then one day her grandson asked if she would like to try some of “his cinnamon loaf.” Enjoy!
