A Taste of Haldimand: November 23, 2023

We have some wonderful bakeries in Haldimand County and I was curious to see if any of the bakers had a personal recipe they might like to share. Meet Kirsten Richardson. Kirsten, along with her husband James, own and operate Richardson’s Farm and Market. You may be familiar with their stall at the Caledonia, Hagersville, or Dunnville farmer’s markets. Amongst the veggies and fruit, you will find jams, preserves, and various baked goods created in their farm store kitchen, outside of Dunnville.

When I asked Kirsten if there was a favourite family recipe, she shared her ‘banana bread’. Her mother, Linda Hutchison, got it from her mother, Jean Leslie. It originated from a neighbour of Jean’s who would often babysit Linda. Also, this neighbour’s husband was a partner with Kirsten’s grandfather in a side venture – a Christmas tree farm.

Kirsten remembers the banana bread being made more as a cake with icing, but it can be baked in a loaf pan or as muffins. She figures this is a version of the original recipe because her mother, a dietician, was always tinkering to make recipes a little bit healthier. Kirsten baked this for her children and even today it is requested as a “must have snack” when the family is planning any type of road trip.
