NANTICOKE—Search recovery efforts were still underway as of press time for the body of 9-year-old Alexander Ottley, who had disappeared into the waters of Lake Erie on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Peacock Point in Nanticoke.

The OPP initially reported that an 8 and 9-year-old boy were on the ice edge around 4:35 p.m. when a wave swept them into the lake. A 10-year-old girl, Alex’s sister, ran to the roadway to flag down a vehicle for help. Two people from the vehicle went onto the ice and were able to rescue the 8-year-old boy, but the other boy did not resurface.

It was later reported that Alex’s grandfather also assisted in the rescue of the younger boy, who is stable. The ice the boys had been on had broken because of mild temperatures.
