Caledonia’s Toll House now boarded up
CALEDONIA—The Toll House, located on the north side of the Grand River in Caledonia, has been boarded up for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to proceed with its work to replace the aging Argyle Street Bridge. Homeowner Lorrie Harcourt was to hand over possession to the Ministry earlier this year. The MTO was given the green light in 2019 to proceed with the expropriation of the house that has stood next to the Argyle Bridge for nearly 150 years. The final report from an expropriation hearing held in June 2019 agreed with the MTO’s claim that it needed to take over the house so it can proceed with replacement of the bridge. The report notes the MTO intends to maintain the Toll House on site and protect any archeological resources around the house. —Haldimand Press photo by Jillian Zynomirski.
