How much should I harvest?
Hello fellow readers from the Emery Homestead. Who’s ready to feel dirt between their fingers? I’m pretty excited – this year we bought a hoop house so we can extend our growing season.
Would you believe me if I told you that you’re capable of growing the plants needed to feed your family for a an entire year? No, I’m not crazy – well, not usually – but I’m on the same journey as you, looking to be self sufficient and grow what my family needs to survive.
Below is a list of how many plants it takes to feed a family of four.
It seems like a big list – I thought, is this even doable?
Time to start some planning. Who else is up for the challenge?
If you live in town, get together with neighbours and have each house grow part of the list. There’s never going to be a law not to grow your own food. If you can’t grow, head to the farmers market and support these great people.
If you’re planning on starting a homestead and have questions, you can set up a time to come do mornings chores with me – bring the children.
Email us at Emeryshomestead@gmail.com or on find us on Facebook.
Also, I’d like to mention about the Seedy Saturday event coming up with the horticultural societies. If you see me, please say hello! I will be trading off two Scarlet Runner Beans – you will never need another, that’s what I call them.
