HAGERSVILLE—On February 28, 2023, the Hagersville District Lions held a modified Effective Speaking Contest. Three contestants, all from Hagersville Elementary School, gave their speeches without being judged, as all would be allowed to go on to the District contest. Each speech was well done, and Lions members gave feedback in an effort to help the youth improve where possible.
Speakers included: Matthew Tivendell, Grade 7, Intermediate; Aubrey Sholer, Grade 5, Junior; and Lucas Bailey, Grade 6, Junior. As an Intermediate, Matthew was required to also make a short (15 minutes to prepare) impromptu speech – not an easy task.
On Sunday, March 5, our three hopefuls spoke in Port Colborne at the District A-2 level where Matthew and Lucas each placed third. Cash prizes were awarded for the top three winners. Congratulations to all. It was an excellent learning experience, and they’ll be better prepared for next year.
