CALEDONIA—Local Haldimand chicken farmers and the Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) were joined by MPP Toby Barrett in donating almost 363kg (800lbs) of chicken to the Caledonia & District Food Bank on Friday, June 14, 2019.

Tom Beischlag, Board Director of CFO, spoke about the importance of their CFO Cares program, which joins with the organization Feed Ontario and 1,300 family farms province-wide to provide over 300 fresh chicken meals to food banks. While CFO Cares has made many contributions to Haldimand food banks since its creation in 2015, this was their first event to raise awareness about food insecurity in the county. Beischlag says he first learned about the importance of food banks from the manager of one years ago; he now donates chickens from his own farm near Hagersville yearly.

Barrett, who has held his position since 1995, also has a background in farming. He too acknowledged the necessity of food banks in Haldimand, citing the half-million Ontarians that depend on them, and placed emphasis on the value of everyone having access to local, fresh food.
