CALEDONIA—Hundreds of people made their way to McKinnon Park in Caledonia on Saturday, May 28, 2022 to celebrate Pride Day.

“We are thrilled with how Pride Day 2022 went for us here in Haldimand Norfolk. This year was our largest event yet,” said Robyn Cunningham Edl, Pride Safety Coordinator, estimating about 700-800 people attended.

“Our entertainment was a major highlight this year with acts like Karma Kameleon and Danny Dymond taking the stage by storm,” continued Cunningham Edl. “Our Kids Fun Zone was popular with all of the young families that were at the event this year, which were MANY. It was wonderful to see the next generation of community and allies participate in these celebrations.”

As seen in previous Pride events, multiple performers hit the stage to fill the park with music, which also hosted a variety of vendors, community organizations, and food options. In efforts to increase family-friendly activities, face painting, art stations, and more were available as well.

Sue Wilkins, Pride Haldimand Norfolk member, noted that the security team was volunteer-based, adding, “They did such an amazing job. As someone who has experienced Pride Days when hateful people were present, Robyn and her team made me feel very comfortable.”

Fortunately, this year saw no contingent of protestors. Cunngingham Edl added, “This year we took extra precautions to ensure a safe space, after the unwarranted hatred we have experienced in years passed…. We were thankful that these measures were not necessary and hope that we can continue to expand our community events in years to come.”
