“Anyone who thinks gardening begins in the spring and ends in the fall is missing the best part of the whole year; for gardening begins in January with the dream.”

–Josephine Nuese

As 2023 is now upon us, there will be some of us who make resolutions for the upcoming year. Gardeners New Year’s resolutions may look a bit like this:

  • Read more gardening books.
  • Grow and eat more fruits and vegetables.
  • Travel to more gardening events.
  • Order a special plant or two from a seed catalogue.
  • Visit lots of garden centres.
  • Relax and enjoy my garden.

We look forward to 2023 being a year of more wonderful times in our gardens and this year marks the 39th year of the Haldimand Horticultural Society (HHS), which began in December 1984.

Save the date! Planning has begun for our annual Seedy Saturday event. Haldimand and Dunnville horticultural societies will be presenting Seedy Saturday on April 29, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cayuga Memorial Arena. There will be gardening ideas, information, and inspiration for everyone. There will be seed giveaways, raffle draws, and amazing vendors and speakers. Our three speakers are: Daren Heimbecker, “All about Peonies”; Kevin Kavanagh, “For the Birds & Bees”; and Sean James, “Looks Good Enough to Eat”. Tickets are $5 and children 12 and under are free.

The next Haldimand Horticultural General meeting will be Thursday, January 26 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Caledonia at 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be Lynn Leach presenting “Therapeutic Plants”.
