Have Your Say: Re: Students say no to education cuts, April 11, 2019 (Gaunt)

To the Editors,

Congratulations to all students of Haldimand County who took a public stand in defense of your education in a day of action. Also, kudos to The Haldimand Press team for excellent coverage of this grassroots movement, and on very short notice.

A message to students: You do realize, don’t you, that the fight to defend and improve your education has just begun? This government is not overly concerned about one demonstration, even though students across the province organized and carried it out. One-time protests die with the next news cycle. They are confident that you, as young persons, will quickly lose interest. There may be a few letters such as this one, and newspaper columns justifying each side, but soon everything settles back to normal. Well, not exactly normal, because the Ford government will continue dismantling your education by stealth, while declaring they are protecting it. If that is true, why do they measure success by enlarging class sizes, eliminating teaching jobs, and stripping hundreds of millions of dollars from education?
