DUNNVILLE—It’s been 25 years since Dunnville-based Hessels Farm Supply Ltd (HFS) first opened their doors to the public.

“I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey,” shared owner Clarence Hessels.

Hessels is a lifelong Dunnville resident, having first worked on his father’s chicken layers farm on Highway 3 just east of town. He purchased the lot at 555 Diltz Rd., where his business now operates, 35 years ago.

“The first 10 years I grew crops of corn, soybeans, and wheat, did custom work planting farmers’ crops, and harvesting, receiving, and drying the crops in the grain elevator here,” he recalled.

In the fall of 1998, when the local fertilizer dealer in town moved to a new location, Hessels decided to go into the business himself, launching Hessels Farm Supply in 1999 to sell fertilizer, seed, and crop protection materials.

He said success in his line of work is all about building and maintaining relationships with local farmers and understanding their needs, such as the various nutrient requirements of different types of soil, and how various kinds of fertilizers affect the soil and life of the crop.

“To understand the growth cycles to recommend the best fertilizers; awareness of pest control and plant diseases to the crops; a strong understanding of different types of fertilizers such as different types of nitrogen phosphors and potash, as well as the need for micronutrients; the knowledge of when and how to apply fertilizer for maximum efficiency, whether through broadcasting or side dressing; understanding regulations and best practices for minimizing runoff and pollution to the environment; and understanding grain markets and when is the best time to sell,” listed Hessels, detailing the high level of knowledge required to run his business.

Asked for some key milestones, Hessels said the biggest is seeing his family get involved in the operation, with his daughter and son-in-law now part of the team.

Teamwork is highly valued at HFS, with Hessels characterizing his staff as energetic and friendly. Two employees have worked there since the business opened its doors.

“I’m grateful for the care (the staff) show to the customers and the way they embrace every challenge. Together we have weathered ups and downs and I’m proud of the business and team we have, and we have become friends over the years.”

He credited their passion and hard work in helping HFS grow from a “small local operation to a trusted name in the community. Each of you brings unique personality and strength to the team…. Thank you for standing by my side and for always going the extra mile.”

Hessels also had glowing words for the community he calls home: “I am so grateful to live in such a wonderful community and thankful for each person I have had the pleasure of working with and learning from in the last 25 years,” said Hessels. “I can’t help but reflect on how far we’ve come, not just as a business but as part of this community.”

He added, “Your trust in us has been the foundation of our success. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of serving hard working farmers, dedicated to their land, their families, and their livelihoods. Many of you have been with us since the beginning and seeing your fields thrive and your businesses grow has been a true honour.”

Hessels concluded, “As we celebrate this milestone, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to each of you! Here’s to the next 25 years and beyond. I look forward to continuing this journey.”
