When James Kaspersetz of Lake Erie Hops got into the niche market of hops farming in 2017, he made sure he did his homework. The 120-acre farm, situated right on the shore of the Great Lakes, is home to 4,000 hops plants of 10 different cultivars, and all fertilizer used is organic. He wanted to do more than simply grow crops on the land he inherited from his father, and he believes he’s found his muse.
The entire farm is cared for by Kaspersetz and his 16-year-old son, with other workers who come in and work sporadically. With a grin, he says his son is very enthusiastic about working on the farm with him.
