JARVIS – As you exit the sanctuary of Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church, signs above the doors remind parishioners, “You are now entering the mission field”. This message has been put into practice for 70 years as members of this congregation share their faith, not just with each other, but throughout the greater community and beyond.
Recently, the congregation celebrated the 70th anniversary milestone. Long-time members Marg Helder-Wesseling and Bev Slofstra shared some history and insight to the life of the congregation during a visit in the church office.
In its earliest days as a church, charter members, many of whom were immigrants from the Netherlands, met in each other’s homes. It became known as Erie Christian Reformed Church and worship took place at Chalmers Presbyterian Church to accommodate the growing membership. The Baptist Church in Balmoral was also used.
