Caledonia Legion donates $72,500

CALEDONIA — The Caledonia Legion gathered with representatives of 17 local charities on Thursday, March 28, 2024 to disperse $72,500 in funds.

“The Caledonia Legion has been continually serving this community for 95 years,” said President Brian Haggith in his opening address, recalling founding members Major G.M. Thomson, Mr. Bayly Jones, Mr. Frank Montour, Dr. Dean, Mr. Morley Forster, Mr. Arnold Moses, and Mr. Wm. Winegard. “Family names that still exist within our community area.”

Haggith recited the Legion’s mission statement to serve veterans, promote remembrance, and serve their communities: “The members of today are working hard to ensure the mission statement is a reality and that we continue the tradition of service…. Today is one of many satisfying days that have occurred here, since the inception of our branch.”

The funds were raised primarily through the Legion’s weekly 50/50 draw, which began in conjunction with Catch the Ace and continues Thursday evenings at the Legion. Additional monies were raised from monthly meat draws and the annual ham and turkey draw.

“I want to thank the recipients for all that you do for our community. If it wasn’t for your dedication, commitment, and hard work, our community would suffer,” concluded Haggith. “We would lack minor sports to keep young people engaged and understand the meaning of team work and leadership, we would lack sufficient food to feed the poor, we would lack social services to help people in crisis, we would lack necessary medical equipment to aid the sick…. The members of Legion Branch 154 are proud to be able to assist where we can and be part of the Caledonia community.”
