Headlines are intended to foreground key information from the following article. In that light, consider the headline, “Five fully vaccinated residents test positive for COVID at long-term care facility in Caledonia” (Sept. 16, 2021). What’s the point of the article?
Buried 14 lines down, we finally discover what actually matters: each one of those patients has “mild symptoms.” Everyone knows that the COVID vaccine can permit rare breakthrough infections. So the widely-known slight risk of testing positive is not newsworthy and should not dominate the headline.
