QUEEN’S PARK—Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady tabled a motion recently in the Ontario Legislature calling on the government to fine any provincial government that breaks fixed election date legislation by three months or more.
“Government should focus on governing during their term and fulfilling their mandate; they should not simply be governing to get re-elected by imposing an early election on the public well before the term ends,” Brady said. “Calling an election because polling looks good or, in the current political climate, to get in front of a federal election is not fair to the public. I think my motion would go a long way toward curtailing that behaviour.”
Specifically, Brady’s motion reads: “In the opinion of the House, any government that breaks the fixed election date legislation by three months or more should be subject to a fine of $2 million.”
Brady is hearing from many constituents they are not in the mood for a provincial election in the same year as a federal vote. She’s hopeful the PC government listens.
“I see the preoccupation at Queen’s Park with ‘when the next election will be’ and that preoccupation detracts from the focus to get things done for Ontario taxpayers,” she said.
