Ontario is home to over 250,000 lakes and countless rivers and streams. As a result, Ontario has one of the best freshwater fisheries in the world, world-class angling opportunities, and a significant commercial fishery.
About 1.5 million active anglers enjoy Ontario’s recreational fisheries. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) – recently merged into what is now called the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry – has responsibility for managing this important resource by promoting both recreational and commercial fishing, while ensuring sustainability.
