OPP Board vacancy

HALDIMAND — Citing the timing and upcoming changes, Haldimand Council has voted to postpone a decision on filling a vacant board position for now.

Haldimand Council voted to defer a motion concerning the interim appointment of a councillor to the Haldimand Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment Board during a meeting on January 14, 2025.

Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley, who also serves on the board, noted that the current composition includes three representatives for Haldimand and stated her belief that appointing an additional councillor was unnecessary at this time.

“There’s no need to take up councillors’ time attending this,” Bentley remarked, referencing the limited meetings before the upcoming byelections for Wards 1 and 4.

She emphasized that the appointment could wait until the vacant council seats are filled.

The motion to defer was carried following a vote, with councillors expressing unanimous support for Bentley’s recommendation.
