Additional charges laid on third suspect in relation to drug overdose

HAGERSVILLE—On November 1, 2019, members of the of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haldimand County Crime Unit, under the direction of Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) Detective Inspector Randy Gaynor, have laid additional charges against an individual as a result of an opioid overdose, which claimed a life in Haldimand County.

On February 1, 2019 police were called to an address on Main Street North in Hagersville where Jason Kerr, 32-years-old, was found unresponsive and later died at the scene. The investigation has revealed that the victim died as a result of an opioid overdose.

Jesse Wellings, 27-years-old, from Haldimand County, is now facing the following charges:

  • Manslaughter – contrary to section 236(b) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Causing death by Criminal Negligence – contrary to section 220(b) CC; and
  • Trafficking a Controlled Substance-Schedule 1 – contrary to section 5(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA).
