Driver faces impaired driving charges following collision

CANBOROUGH—Haldimand OPP has charged a 31-year-old with drinking and driving offences as well as a drug possession offence after investigating a single vehicle collision on Highway 3, in Canborough.

On Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at 12:40 a.m., OPP, Haldimand County Fires Services, and Haldimand County paramedics responded to Highway 3 near Lane Road for a single vehicle collision. A witness reported the driver was in the vehicle and appeared to be unresponsive.

On arrival, the driver was conscious and was assessed by paramedics. The driver was not injured as a result of the collision.

While speaking with the driver, police detected signs of impairment and the driver was subsequently arrested.

Police conducted a search of the vehicle and located an illicit drug, which is suspected to be heroin.

OPP investigation determined the vehicle was travelling eastbound on Highway 3 when it crossed over the westbound lane.

The vehicle then struck a road sign, and collided into the ditch.

OPP has charged the 31-year-old of Dunnville with:

  • Driving a motor vehicle while impaired
  • Driving a motor vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance

The accused is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cayuga at a later date to answer to the charges.
