Online fraud alert in Haldimand County

HALDIMAND—A member of the community caught on to a fraudulent website and notified the police. On January 26, 2024 Haldimand OPP received a report of a fraud from a concerned citizen of Haldimand County.

It was determined that a local resident listed an ad on Kijiji to sell a used vehicle.

Communication was quickly established by several interested individuals.

Several people indicated that before they could purchase the vehicle, the seller was to go to a website provided by the potential buyer to purchase a “Vehicle Audit Report”, as they didn’t trust any others.

The OPP are warning all Haldimand County residents to be extremely vigilant when searching websites that someone has provided, especially when it comes to providing personal information and credit card numbers.

To avoid these types of scams, remember the following general words of advice:

  • Resist pressure to “act now.” If an offer sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
  • If the buyer wants to use a service you have not heard of, be sure to check it out to be sure it is reliable – check its website, call its customer service hotline, and read its terms of agreement and privacy policy. If you do not feel comfortable with the service, do not use it.
  • NEVER wire money or use a bank-to-bank transfer in a transaction.
  • ALWAYS try to deal locally when buying or selling an automobile or other high value merchandise.
  • DO NOT sell property to someone who is unwilling to meet you face to face.
  • If possible, take someone with you or tell someone what your meeting location is.
  • Report the incident to the financial institution where the money was sent through (e.g., money service business such as Western Union or MoneyGram, bank or credit union, credit card company, or internet payment service provider).
  • If the fraud took place online through Facebook, eBay, a classified ad such as Kijiji, or a dating website, be sure to report the incident directly to the website. This is often found under “Report Abuse” or “Report an Ad”.

If you or someone you know has become a victim of fraud, you can report it to your local police. You can also contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit antifraudcentre.ca.
