JARVIS/DUNNVILLE—Through investigation, OPP learned that on August 31, 2021 a Jarvis resident received a cheque for $2,000 from an individual who claimed to be an artist.
The victim was to keep $400 and send $1,600 to the “artist.”
The victim contacted the police and was advised that this was a case of cybercrime and that the cheque was fraudulent.
On August 31, 2021 at 8 p.m. OPP received another report of a fraud. OPP learned that the victim received notification via a “pop up” ad that their computer had a virus. The victim called the phone number provided and was told to purchase $1,600 in Google Play cards. They purchased the cards and then gave the numbers to an unknown person on the phone.
After speaking with a family member, the victim realised it was a fraudulent transaction and called police, but it was too late. There was no way of tracking down the unknown persons who defrauded them.
