HALDIMAND—It was a white Christmas in 2022 as Haldimand was one of many areas hit with extreme winter weather just days before. Blizzards and high winds led to whiteouts and poor road conditions, with OPP West Region reporting on Christmas Eve that in the past 11 hours they had responded to over 160 collisions. All roads were closed in Grey Bruce and Perth counties, along with sections of the 400 series highways. Areas along Lake Erie also saw some significant waves, with the blowing winds carrying the water onto nearby structures where it would then freeze. Above, April Macdonald of Dunnville sent in this photo of her in-laws’ place on the lake, which ended up coated in a thick layer of ice and snow. At left, the Zynomirski home on Lakeshore Road in South Cayuga saw similar conditions. In both areas it became difficult to discern where the land ended and the water began due to the ice pushing forward from the lake.
