To the Editors,

The reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated. I would like to put forward some additional information. Firstly, I am alleged as being a “lame duck” councillor and secondly the writer states he has been engaged with me for 10 years with his request.

I should point out that a “lame duck” councillor refers to one whose successor has already been elected. In the past my election platform was for term limitation, perhaps two terms. I had also indicated when canvassing for the previous election that this would be my last. That does not make me a “lame duck” councillor. I can assure you my voice is heard at Council and I do whatever I can to represent the interests of my ward.

Perhaps the writer is confused with what happens during nomination time when there are restrictions placed on Council, i.e. lame duck Council.

The reference to 10 years is not accurate. I am in my second four-year term.

The writer’s wish is that a section of Fairview Avenue East, which is an open ditch, be enclosed. Working with staff we were hopeful that it could be done through a maintenance plan and not a capital budgeted item. I supported it and still do.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 hit. We were forced to reassess our priorities. During the first year there were several items that were postponed. This included a petitioned sidewalk, other sidewalks, other ditches, and other items. Obviously, the Fairview ditch project didn’t fare well in this priority listing.

This year we are already struggling with priorities to meet our tax increase cap. That said, I do not expect the Fairview ditch enclosure will make the priority list again.

The Fairview Avenue East open ditch has existed for many years. In discussion with staff, I am informed that with regular maintenance the ditch is functioning well.

Ward 6 Councillor
