The need for a local bus service connecting to Hamilton

To the Editors,

Why can’t we get local busses running in Caledonia, especially for the low income and the new immigrants here? Government wants people to move from the city to far ends. When your car is broken down, you cannot depend on taxis – very expensive.

Public servants should not use fear mongering

To the Editors,

We have all heard about the horrible, possibly targeted, drive-by shooting in Cayuga on May 27, 2025. There can be a myriad of reasons behind this cowardly act and we can remain hopeful that the Haldimand OPP will ascertain, track down, and bring to justice the culprits.

The majority of us simply have no understanding of what happened or why, and we can only speculate. But the “parachute” Conservative MP for Haldimand-Norfolk from Toronto, Leslyn Lewis, has taken this unfortunate incident to new lows with the Conservatives’ widespread populist tactic of using anything to try to smear the government of the day, no matter the lack of any supporting evidence.

Lewis claims the government of the day is allowing criminal elements to “run amok” with loose bail policies, showing they just do not care about the publics’ safety. How does Lewis know the perpetrators are on bail when they have not been apprehended? She does not know.

Lewis claims that the Conservatives will bring in tougher minimum sentencing if elected. Which they were not. However, Lewis does not mention that the previous Conservative government under Harper already tried to bring tougher minimum sentencing. Those changes to the Criminal Code were, for the most part, struck down by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional.

Lewis’ populist rants are another fashionable scheme to just keep repeating everything until everyone agrees, or just gets sick of listening and tunes out.

Lewis was elected to serve ALL residents of Haldimand-Norfolk, no matter what their political leanings may be.

There is enough upset, angst, and fear in our society now with threats to our sovereignty, our economy, our safety in general, and other concerns without fear mongering like Lewis playing upon our anxieties just to get votes.

What Lewis should be first, foremost, and always, is a public servant. Lewis is there to represent her constituents, not the populist rantings of her right-wing leader who did not even win his own seat.
