HALDIMAND—Children and youth in Haldimand County will soon have another way to stay active in the summer. The Haldimand Wolfpack, a non-profit sports club created to grow the interest in rugby for youth in the region, will begin its inaugural season on July 13, 2019.
President of the Haldimand Wolfpack, Paul Buchanan, said he was born into rugby and has been involved in Canadian rugby since the early 1990s.
He moved to Haldimand four years ago with his wife and has been involved in the community ever since.
Buchanan said he wanted to start the rugby league to give parents another option when deciding how to keep their kids active in the summer.
“It’s nice to have another option; baseball and soccer are great, but there is not much for the two to three age range,” noted Buchanan.
The rugby program is non-contact and is based on an Australian youth program. The goal for both younger and older children is to introduce as many children as possible to the game.
