HALDIMAND—Haldimand Council voted 5-2 in favour of allowing cannabis retail stores in the municipality at a Council meeting on Monday, January 21, 2019.
Mayor Ken Hewitt said the hardest part of the vote was separating personal beliefs for what is best for the County. He added that in the last six months all the councillors have worked hard to educate themselves on the industry.
“I have a better appreciation for the cannabis industry; it’s not just rolling a joint and smoking it for the sake of smoking it, there are so many uses,” said Hewitt.
Hewitt voted yes in the recorded vote, along with councillors Bernie Corbett, Tony Dalimonte, Stewart Patterson, and Rob Shirton.
Councillors Dan Lawrence and John Metcalfe voted no to opting-in.
