Trash Talking: Lost Recycling Boxes

Dear Trash Talking Trish & Tabitha:

I just received the new Recycling Guide in the mail and read that I can request a new blue box to be delivered to my house, on my next collection day, for FREE! This makes me SUPER happy because one day I came home to my little house in the country and if you can believe it, my box was gone! Do you know about this blue box thief stealing all the boxes around the County?

Dear W. D.,

We have been wondering the same thing! We have been receiving multiple requests for new blue and black boxes which, if you can believe, costs us quite a bit of money at about $5 a box!

You are correct, we do supply these boxes for free because we want to encourage residents to recycle as much as possible. Did you know that the latest landfill capacity report published by the Ontario Waste Management Association states that as of 2017 we only have 14 years of landfill capacity left in Ontario? The more we reduce what we consume, and reuse and recycle what we can, the less waste goes to landfill, which will hopefully give us some more time without having to build new landfills. Let’s face it – when it comes to landfills NIMBY (Not In My BackYard)!

We did a bit more research though when we started receiving the influx of blue box requests and we determined that the majority of these calls come in after we get nasty weather. On my way home from work one day, look what I found:
