HALDIMAND—Two local youths have been recognized for their efforts with a $10,000 scholarship from the Wanda and Scott Memorial Foundation to pursue post-secondary education.
The memorial foundation was established in 2008 following the tragic deaths of mother-and-son Wanda and Scott Salverda, who passed away in a house fire in 2003.
In addition to handing out an annual scholarship, the foundation also provides funding to many worthwhile charitable endeavours including food banks and hospitals.
“To date, over $800,000 dollars has been put toward various causes across the two counties. The highlight of every fundraising year has been our golf tournament,” said Foundation Member Steve Boekee. “The tournament usually raises around $50,000, although this year due to COVID restrictions we aren’t able to put on as elaborate an event as we would like. We have a goal of $30,000 and we are focusing on supporting as many local businesses as possible through our prizes and giveaways…. We are very fortunate that our supporters are very faithful, and it looks like we will be full within the COVID restrictions.”
