Letter to the editor: Why $10 per day childcare is not conservative

To the Editors,

Last week there was a joint announcement by Premier Doug Ford and his “good friend” Justin Trudeau. They have agreed to a massive $13 billion deal to provide $10/day child care to all families in Ontario by 2025.

The Prime Minister explained, “Families shouldn’t have to choose between having children and pursuing their career.”

Hold on Mr. Prime Minister, pump the brakes. Why shouldn’t families have to choose? Is that not a part of being an adult?

Decisions we make have consequences. People make different decisions with different consequences. For example, you might be a childless couple living in Cayuga, a senior living in Port Dover, or a family in Selkirk where a mom decided to stay home with her kids. All three of these families will now be expected to pay taxes that go towards subsidizing an Oakville couple with a combined income of over $200,000 that wants to send their two kids to day care. Does this seem balanced to you?

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for subsidized day care for those who really need it. Single moms and low-income families need help with day care, which is why the Ontario government already subsidizes 150,000 children and their low-income families, providing free or low fee day care to help them out. This is a great program that makes sense.

This new childcare program is something you would come to expect from the Liberal or NDP parties, but to have this come out of the supposed Progressive Conservative party of Ontario? True conservatives recognize that all families are unique and that a one-size-fits-all government program isn’t going to work.

My wife and I have four kids and that is a decision we made; I’m not expecting the government to fund our decision. Although, it sure would be nice if they stopped piling the debt onto my kid’s future.

Doug Ford, if this is the kind of help you want to give our kids, I’d like to opt out.

Is there an actual conservative party out there?
