HALDIMAND—A local institution is closing its doors after 63 years. Since 1956 Central Haldimand Charities have made it their mission to ensure that money donated to various causes stays within the county.
“When I first started 15 years ago, they were having trouble finding volunteers,” says Denise Postma, the organization’s bookkeeper. “For the past five years we’ve been collecting money through funeral homes. Now it’s just come down to me and one other woman who take care of everything. It’s become unwieldy, and really the funeral homes could handle all that themselves. There just haven’t been enough volunteers and it’s just run its course.”
