CAYUGA—Walking out onto the street of downtown Cayuga, you may be overwhelmed by the swarm of bugs that line the bridge and street lights near the river.
These swarms of Mayflies, otherwise known as fish flies, are nothing new to Haldimand County residents. According to the County, this happens at the end of the summer every year in towns along the Grand River, however, the swarms always vary in size.
“It is more of a nuisance than anything,” said Brent Hammond, Haldimand County. “We use brooms and leaf blowers to get them off the sidewalks and roads before it gets too slippery.”
Hammond noted that it was unfortunate for businesses and residents that it happens in the downtown core, although he was happy to hear that it was for a good reason.
