HALDIMAND—The Haldimand Press is proud to announce that it is once again a top-three finalist for various categories in the Better Newspaper Competition (BNC), organized by the Ontario Community Newspaper Association.
Mike Renzella, Reporter and Assistant Editor at The Press, is vying for the Reporter of the Year – Stephen Shaw Award. This award is sponsored by Ontario Power Generation and is a recognition of true reporter initiative. Three of Renzella’s articles were submitted for judging based on local relevance, quality of writing, and depth of research. Joining him in the top three is Jeremy Grimaldi of the Markham Economist & Sun and Kim Zarzour of Richmond Hill/Thornhill Liberal.
Renzella’s article, “Tennis champ honoured to oversee tennis program named after parents”, is a finalist for the Sport and Recreation category. This article was published in July 2021 and shared David Brown’s excitement to be starting a tennis program in Haldimand County due to his family’s extensive history in the sport.
The article “Geronimo’s Dream” is up for the Diversity Coverage award. Also written by Renzella in July 2021, this article shared the story of Geronimo Henry, his time at the Mohawk Institute Residential School, and his dream to see a memorial built at the grounds with the name of every student.
The Haldimand Press’ Nurses Week section began in 2021 as a response to the ongoing pandemic and a thank you to our community’s wonderful nurses, doctors, and other health care employees. It has placed in the top three for the Best Feature/Unit Pages award.
The exact placement for each of these awards (first, second, or third) will be announced at the BNC award presentatio on April 29.
Additionally, The Haldimand Press website was give an honourable mention for Best Community Website/WebPortal, circulation under 9,999.
