Congratulations to Sandra House, 9 Elm Avenue, Hagersville. She was awarded the Garden of the Month by Haldimand Horticultural Society (HHS) for her spectacular gardens and a special designated sign was placed on her property. If you know of a resident whose property has aesthetic appeal, please nominate them for the month of September. Email HHS at haldimandhorticulture@gmail.com.

HHS’ Green Gardian Youth Group is the recipient of the Reta Caldwell Environmental Award from the Ontario Horticulture Association.

The group was the inspiration of society member Barb Roth, created to reach out to the youth in our community. Their lime green t-shirts identify them as they tend their community garden at the Ron Clark Walkway in Caledonia. They named the garden after a dragon: Akira (meaning sunlight). The garden box has been brightly painted.

CALEDONIA—Green Gardian Youth participants are shown constructing a bug hotel and painting their community garden box at the Ron Clark Walkway in Caledonia.

Their meetings were all held at the community garden site, where they did planting, weeding, suckering the young tomato plants, and identifying local plants that grow in the riverside environment. They watched and protected a turtle nesting area. Activities they participated in included constructing bug hotels and rock painting.

The goal of the Green Gardians is to pass on our knowledge and love of gardening to our youth members in an open, friendly, and relaxed environment.

If you love gardening and nature, follow HHS’ website and Facebook. We are a club for all gardeners. We grow friendships as well as gardens that help beautify our communities. If you are interested in becoming a member or want to know more, email       haldimandhorticulture@gmail.com.
