HAGERSVILLE—Last Thursday, October 20, 2022, the Hagersville Lions held the 22nd weekly draw for Catch the Ace at the Hagersville Legion Br. 164. We sold 590 tickets, making it the week with the most tickets sold so far.

Catch the Ace is a form of a 50/50 lottery; 50% will go to our chosen causes of the West Haldimand Hospital and Healthcare Foundation and the Hagersville Food Bank, with a small portion going to the Hagersville Lions Club. The other 50% of the winnings are paid out, with 20% of each week’s sales going to the weekly winner and 30% added to the jackpot.

The weekly winner of our 22nd weekly draw was Cathy Gibson. Since we took in $3,950 her 20% amounted to $790. She was so happy.

At the beginning of Catch the Ace we take a new deck of cards and put each of the 52 cards in an envelope. After mixing them in the ticket drum we number them from 1 to 52 – not knowing in which envelope the Ace of Spades is.

If you buy a ticket you can choose an envelope number that has not been drawn, so every week one number less is available to pick in your chase to find the Ace.

When Cathy bought her winning ticket she chose envelope #11, which turned out to be the King of Spades. Cathy did not win the jackpot, but she was very happy with her weekly 20% of $790.

Next week will be week 23, and that means that we have 30 more envelopes to choose from. The odds are so much better than any OLG lottery.

We have so much fun holding the Catch the Ace every Thursday at the Legion. Come over to the Legion Br. 164 on Thursday between 4:30 and 8 p.m. to buy tickets, chat with some friends, feel the thrill and the tension building, and give yourself a chance to win either the weekly prize or the jackpot, which is at an estimated $11,200. Or you can watch the draws live on the Hagersville Lions’ new Facebook page.

A big thank you as well to all who brought their returnable empties to the Hagersville Lions Bottle Drive on October 22. All of the funds raised will be part of our budgeted donation to over 30 good causes.
