2023 has just begun – I can’t believe January is already over. It was a mild month and winter has definitely come back in February.

So what exciting things are happening with the Dunnville Horticulture Society this month? This month’s program speaker is Adam Chamberlain, a project manager for the forestry department at Haldimand County. He will be speaking to us about native trees in our Carolinian forests. You don’t want to miss this exciting talk about what’s right in your own backyard.

This month, we would love to hear from you. There’s been tons of excitement with our members for upcoming activities such as workshops, bus tours, garden tours, and community projects. We would love to hear from you about anything that you would like to see the horticulture society take part in or provide. This can be done via email to myself.

February is always a slower month for our gardens, but it is time to start figuring out our plans, getting our seeds ready, and prepping for our summer season. If you missed our January program night, you missed out on some great information. Our January program night consisted of videos and information on sharpening and maintaining our tools. These tools are extremely important for use during our peak seasons and now is the best time to make sure everything is in tiptop shape. We also discussed some of our favourite YouTube gardeners. There are plenty of Canadian videos on YouTube to help you prep for your upcoming season and show you all the things you can do in the winter when we can’t be outside with our gardens.

If you’re looking for something fun to do this month please come out and join us on Thursday, February 16 for our native trees of the Carolinian forest talk. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Optimist Hall in Dunnville. Light snacks and refreshments are available, along with memberships and the Ways and Means table. Also, DHS is supporting lug a mug to do our part in helping the environment.

Please note that the Lion’s Home and Garden Show is happening April 13 to 15 and DHS will have a booth. There is also the collaboration of Dunnville and Haldimand horticultural societies in this year’s large Seedy Saturday event on April 29 at the Cayuga Arena. Hope to see you all there.
