To the Editor,
We’ve all just received word of a potentially important new element in the debate over the proposed large-scale housing development in the Nanticoke area. Last week’s Press included an insert from Imperial/Nanticoke with early thinking about a possible new facility to manufacture hydrogen fuel. Quite possibly Ontario would indeed benefit from such a contribution to its net-zero future. But the question is: where to do so?
Hydrogen fuel appears to be highly explosive. Also, it has a potential to be stored in the form of ammonia, which seemingly can cause lung damage or blindness, and may even be fatal. Thus, an industry-centred site like the Nanticoke Industrial Park could be the ideal location.
But do we really want to build thousands of new homes nearby? Would they even sell if people knew that a hydrogen fuel plant might pop up in the neighborhood? And if somehow they were purchased, what might be their resale value a decade or so later?
