JARVIS—From mermaids and princesses, to sailors and sea creatures, adventure awaits “under the sea” as students at Jarvis Public School (JPS) stage the musical production The Little Mermaid Junior on May 3 and 4, 2023.
The production includes a cast and crew of 50 to 60 students from Grades 3 to 8. The Grade 3 students are in the choir with the main cast and the crew comprised of students in Grades 4 to 8. According to teacher Julie McIntyre, the students started working on the production in January. She says, “They’ve practised every day and then Wednesdays after school until 5 p.m.”
Along with the commitment of the students, a staff-student design team and parent volunteers have created the impressive set and costumes. This is the first JPS musical production since Suessical in May 2019. Teacher Karen Craddock shares, “Productions provide an opportunity for students who excel in ‘the arts’. It teaches dedication and teamwork. These students are able to ‘shine’ while making new friends, having fun, and learning about being responsible.”
Dress rehearsals began on April 19 with the costumes, sets, and props complete and the cast ready to fine tune their performance.
Everyone at JPS is excited to welcome audiences on May 3 and 4, during Education Week, for what promises to be a fun and entertaining show.
Showtimes are 11:45 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day (note: students from other schools will be present for the matinees and receive priority seating). Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for evening performances. Tickets are $5; to purchase, contact the school at 519-587-2612.
