HALDIMAND—Following Fraud Prevention month, Haldimand OPP is asking residents to continue watching out for cons and scams after a resident lost $140,000 to a crypto investment scam in the Haldimand County area.
It was determined that the victim responded to an online ad from a social media platform for an investment opportunity promising great returns on funds initially invested.
Between January of 2023 and March of 2023, the victim invested approximately $140,000. When the victim requested their funds, they were instructed that they would have to pay more money for them to get their original investment returned. The victim realized that this was a scam and contacted police.
Cons and scams are attempted daily through online platforms, by phone, by letter mail, or by fax. The reality is that fraud is a multi-million-dollar enterprise that will only end when the con artists stop making money.
If you are considering an online investment, the Haldimand County OPP want you to be absolutely sure who you are dealing with because once you send cryptocurrency, it’s gone.
