Church cookbooks. I trust the recipes in a church cookbook to be fairly easy to make, the ingredients will be items I probably have in my kitchen, and I expect they will taste pretty good. I haven’t been disappointed. Sure, there are some recipes I have made that I didn’t like, but that is just my personal preference. The recipe was still a good one.
The books I use the most are from the United Church. The “Best of Grace” soup edition was published by the members of Grace United Church, Caledonia in 2010. I received this as a Christmas gift from Marlene Kett that same year. One of my favourite soup recipes is Gord’s sweet potato soup. The bacon flavour sets this one apart. I have tried some variations from the original recipe with success. Instead of using milk or cream I have just added more stock until I have the consistency I prefer. I have also used chicken or vegetable stock instead of beef. Serve this with homemade bread and butter for a delicious lunch!
