For some time now I have been concerned about the lack of street lighting at some road intersections. In particular, the Reg. Rd. 20 and Yaremy Rd. In early April 2023 I raised these concerns with my ward councillor and he agreed that traffic on the above mentioned roads was increasing and in the interest of safety a street lamp at this location was a good idea. He said he would raise the issue at the next Council meeting.

He must have presented his views so well that along with Yaremy Rd., a light would also be installed at the Aikens Rd. intersection. This fact was reported in The Haldimand Press.

I subsequently contacted my councillor to thank him for going to bat for his constituents, and enquired as to what he thought might be a reasonable timeframe for the installation of the light project. As there are some other agencies involved in okaying the project, he thought an 8-to-10-week timeframe wasn’t unreasonable.

Forward to the end of July and still no sign of a light. A call to our councillor said that there were unforeseen difficulties; supply chain issues, unable to procure an electrical contractor due to all the Covid layoffs, etc.; perhaps before the end of the year there would be lights installed.

Now to a working man, used to the ways of private business, a delay of eight months would be unheard of and unacceptable. Perhaps in the taxpayer-funded County of Haldimand, this is ho hum and unnoteworthy.

It is now the end of 2023. Over eight months have passed since my first call to my councillor. Now at night when I drive to Dunnville at Aikens Rd. and Yaremy Rd., I cast my eye heavenward hoping to see the light. But all around is darkness and despair.

Come on people, really, eight months and still no lights. As old timers with callused hands would say, “Git-er-done, Git-er-done”.
