To the editor,
Whether we realize it or not, the coming federal election will be the most important one in decades, certainly for the last 80 years. The political situation worldwide in general and our own in particular is uncertain and potentially very dangerous. While it is not a time to panic, it also is not a time to be complacent and underestimate the dangers.
What is needed to cope with such a situation is unity, good will, and working together for the common good. This is not a time for culture wars and division. These are luxuries we cannot afford at the moment.
There always are and always will be differences of opinion between the so called right and the so called left side of the political spectrum. Both sides have their reasons and arguments, and, in moderation, there is nothing wrong with that. But this is also not the time for partisan politics as usual, for bad mouthing, finger pointing windbags, and empty promises, or, even worse, politicians who deliberately create and thrive on division for their own personal benefit.
If we wish to remain the independent, respected country we are, what is needed now are experienced people with proven abilities and achievements, wherever they can be found, who can successfully steer the country through this dangerous period. It may be an often quoted cliché, but is nevertheless true: United we stand, divided we fall!
So, let us make an effort to remain standing.
Bert Schaefer,
